DudeBra 1: You gotta try surfing it’s gnarly but fun.

DB2: Yeah surfing’s okay if you like it tame, you should try kitesurfing

DB1: Kite surfing? duuuude, get on my level, the next thing is foil surfing, now that takes stones.

This guy: bra....hold my bee r.

Seriously though, I’ve tried surfing. I’ve trying foiling, I tried kitesurfing...how the ever living hell do you combine them and live? Even staying foilborn is a mental circus.

Foil surfing seems...less fun to me. I’ve tried kite surfing (to mostly zero success unless you count a dislocated shoulder). Regular surfing is more my speed, and probably always will be.

foil surfing is for people who are spending way too much time surfing and need a new unnecessary challenge in their life.

I’m too old for new things. I’ll just go back to riding a longboard and yelling at clouds.

When I go to Hawaii (Maui) the most adventurous thing I can manage is to snorkel around with some turtles. I’ll watch the surfers and kite surfers up on the north end if I’m up there but there is no way in hell I’m getting in that water. A man’s got to know his limitations.

One day I was skating on my lake in a strong breeze and thought: “What if I got one of my windsurf sails?” It was hard but awesome when I got it right. This seems like one of those things, just two or three levels deeper.

I have a friend who uses kitewings to ski across the lake in the winter, it’s a blast. I guess that’s the answer to my windsurf sail being used for the same thing, but awkwardly.

I’ve also spent time around pro surfers/windsurfers/kiteboarders, and they have all kinds of crazy ideas. Like kiteboarding in the first place, for that matter.

One of my friends took a windsurf sail, built a simple frame with one long 2x4 with skateboard trucks, mounted a windsurf sail to it, and went screaming down the highway across the middle (isthmus) of Maui one night. The wind typically blows 30mph across there, all the time during certain times of the year. He said he thought he might have been going 60 when he crashed. He wasn’t wearing protective gear, knowing him, probably flip flops and board shorts, maybe a t-shirt. That was the worst road rash I’d ever seen.

I learned to windsurf on the north shore of Maui over near the airport. It’s a little like learning to ski by being dropped off here:
